The following letter was delivered to the Burnaby Masjid Al-Salaam on October 26, 2014. It is a letter of support following the attacks by self-radicalized Muslims in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (Oct. 20) and in Ottawa (Oct. 22). Both men had, independently, attended the mosque. The mosque tried to help Martin Rouleau, the Montreal driver, align with the mosque’s moderate voice, but he rejected it and had to leave. The Ottawa gunman, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, left on his own accord, disgusted that the mosque welcomed non-Muslims through its doors. While the media generally portrayed the mosque in a favourable light, they nonetheless received hate messages. The letter, signed by the leadership was presented to the congregation, who informally supported it (and as many as possible also signed it). It indicates our support for their efforts and our desire to develop a relationship.
